Factors to consider when buying dslr camera - Buyer's guide

There is more marketing than what the real impact Megapixel has on the quality of photos. As rightly known, megapixel is a measure of quantity and not the quality of the photograph. Having said this, what really matters is whether you are moving or upgrading from an existing DSLR camera or switching from a mobile camera/point and shoot camera to DSLR camera.

In case of latter, it really does not matter. Anything including and above 24 MP is good enough for all type of photography, whether it is Portrait photography, Landscape Photography, Sports Photography, Wedding Photography, Birthday Photography or Wildlife Photography.

If you are switching from an existing DSLR camera to a new advance DSLR camera then you may need to look at what is the picture size you are looking to print with new camera as quality of picture is not impacted but size of picture is mostly impacted due to bigger size of sensor with higher megapixel cameras. See size reference below for better understanding.

Auto-Focus (AF) Points

When buying a DSLR camera the key things to consider is the ability to control the image quality and details. No of Focus point is one of the most important aspects to taking sharp and clear picture, especially of a moving subject. If you will be using your camera to take more pictures of Kids, Pets or sports then higher AF is a definite advantage.

So, if you are going to take lots of photographs of moving people and Kids or going to birthday photography, wedding photography etc then go for a higher AF points. It will ensure that you are not frustrated at the end of day due to blur picture.

F-Stop (f-number)

F-Stop is a technical term in photography but it’s important that you have some level of idea. So, without getting into too much technical, a f-number or F-Stop is defined as a number used in photography to define the amount of light that is allowed to enter the camera. F-Stop is related to Lens rather than camera. A lens having very high f-number is will allow more light to enter the camera meaning it will be very helpful especially when light is low.

Following are the range of f-numbers which a lens can have.

  • f/1.4 (very large opening of your aperture blades, lets in a lot of light)
  • f/2.0 (lets in half as much light as f/1.4)
  • f/2.8 (lets in half as much light as f/2.0)
  • f/4.0 (etc.)
  • f/5.6
  • f/8.0
  • f/11.0
  • f/16.0
  • f/22.0
  • f/32.0 (very small aperture, lets in almost no light)

Note : When you move one stop up or down, the amount of light received by the camera is either doubled or halved. This will happen as the aperture shown above will open to allow double the light.

ISO defines the sensitivity of the senor to light. This can be controlled by increasing the ISO number in your camera setting. So, if you have low light situation then you can increase the ISO of your camera and it will allow more light to be captured.

However, there is a flip side to this. At high ISO the image becomes grainy and quality of image is reduced. Ideally people would like to take all image in range of 100 to 3200 for decent quality of image.
